Nine Levels of Listening

Nine Levels of Listening

Level 1 – Ignoring

You’re physically present, mentally absent.

  • Your eyes may be on the speaker, but your mind is elsewhere
  • No real processing is happening.
  • Example: Scrolling while someone talks

Key marker: Nothing sticks.

Level 2 – Hearing

Sound reaches your ears, but meaning barely registers.

  • You catch words, not intent
  • Minimal comprehension
  • Often automatic or passive

Key marker: “Wait—what did you say?”

Level 3 – Selective Listening

You listen for what interests or benefits you.

  • Filtering for keywords, cues, or relevance
  • Hearing what you want to hear
  • Filling in gaps with assumptions
  • Very common in conversations and when hearing the Word.

“Just like Pastor Mark always says.”

Key marker: You respond, but miss nuance.

Level 4 – Attentive Listening

Focused and intentional.

  • Eye contact, reduced distractions
  • You track the speaker’s main points
  • You can summarize accurately
  • Take Notes

Key marker: You understand what they’re saying.

Level 5 – Active Listening

Engaged, responsive, and validating.

  • (Somebody say AMEN!)
  • Varies depending upon setting, in one-on-one or classroom setting:
  • —Asking clarifying questions
  • —Reflecting back (“So you’re saying…”)

Key marker: The speaker feels heard and connected to those listening.

Active listeners draw on the speaker’s gift and affect the flow of the utterance.

Level 6 – Empathic Listening

Listening for meaning and emotion.

“Are you feeling me?”

  • Attuned to tone, pauses, and body language
  • You sense what’s behind the words
  • Example: The speaker’s passion draws the listener deeper into the message.

Key marker: The speaker feels understood.

Level 7 – Critical / Analytical Listening

Evaluating content carefully.

  • Weighing logic, evidence, and assumptions
  • Distinguishing TRUTH from fact and opinion
  • Common in teaching, debate, and study

Key marker: You assess truth and coherence.

During and after the sermon or class

Level 8 – Reflective / Contemplative Listening

Deep, spacious attention.

  • Silence is allowed
  • You listen without urgency to respond
  • Meaning unfolds over time

Key marker: Insight emerges, not just information.

Level 9 – Transformational Listening

(highest level)

Listening that changes you.

  • You’re open to being corrected or reshaped
  • Ego and defenses are quiet
  • Common in spiritual practices such as prayer and discipleship.

Key marker: You don’t leave the same as you entered.
